Preload going in wrong order (oldest to newest)

The help text says that preload is supposed to go from newest to oldest posts, but on my site the exact opposite is happening. We have thousands of posts on an active site and I’d really rather not preload all the old ones each time it runs just to get to the latest posts. Anyone else notice this same problem?
