preheader menu and mobile devices

hi,
I’m designing my site with a text menu in the preheader and nothing in the main menu. I see on my iPhone that the preheader is not shown, and the main menu area appears as a black bar – of course, there’s nothing there for the bar to show. I’d like to stick with my current design rather than shift back to the main menu with drop downs, which I found a bit awkward. How can I modify the code to display the preheader for mobile and get rid of the black bar? I assume this problem applies to the site display on the iPad, too…
