    Hi WordPress friends,

I have just started to use WordPress and am now helping another user develop her WordPress website. I have read many of the Codex documents, including the one on editing, but I would like to know the best option for helping another user edit the XHTML. The owner of the site sent me the information to access her files on her server, and I have been able to edit CSS and PHP files. However, when I need to edit the XHTML, what is the best way? As I understand the options, I could download her database onto my development platform, edit it, then copy it back onto her server, or I could ask for her WordPress password and access her site as she would then edit using the code view, or I could email her the new XHTML and she could paste it into code view herself. Are these the only options? Which option do experienced developers prefer? Thank you very, very much! I really need and appreciate your help!

Ask her to set you up as a user with Admin status. Then you can log into her blog and edit posts, pages or theme files at will. I tend to work on copies of the latter offline and then ftp the amended files. I have two development platforms (one for blogs – one for WP CMS sites) that incorporate a range of sample pages for testing out various conditions. That at least, allows me to make the really humiliating mistakes in private. ??

I also use the Quicktags Extender plugin on client sites. It allows me to fashion quicktags on a per-site basis, so clients can then take over most of the basic formatting themselves but I retain control of the output to some degree.

    Hi esmi,

Thank you for your reply! Your advice has been extremely helpful. She has registered me as an Administrator on her blog, and I will use the export function to download her data to edit and test on my development platform. Thank you!
