    Hi,

    I’m not using WP yet but think I am going with it as my CMS for my first self-hosted site. I’m fairly good at working out how to do things for myself but I am not a programmer/developer of any sort. Can anyone answer these basic questions for me before I go ahead, would be much appreciated;

Is there a list somewhere of the plugins I need to get the functions I am used to on Wp.com (those installed with the guided transfer)?

Is it possible for WP.com users to Like a WP.org blog, and could I still appear Freshly Pressed?

I thought using WP.org over .com would mean I had more control of design and layout without knowing PHP, but just saw a post saying the opposite. Which is it?

If I go ahead with a URL, can I change it later without going via MultiSite?

Will standard hosting allow me to change DNS records so I can have custom shortlinks from bit.ly??

And last one is not really WP related sorry, if I buy hosting will I get any VPS server functions? Or should I look at hosting from a VPS?

    Many thanks for any help,
    PP

    No.

Both ?? You get more control, and you don’t HAVE to know PHP, but it helps if you need to edit a theme. www.remarpro.com means yuo can use any theme out there. WordPress.com limits your themes.

    Of course!

Yes, but you need a plugin for that.

If you’re brand new, you probaly dno’t need a VPS. Shared hosting should be fine. Look for a host that allows you to upgrade from Shared to VPS, though.

    Cheers Ipstenu!

Not having the benefit of WP.com users is disappointing, but thanks for your answers.

Re: hosting being via VPS, I also want a twitter automater that needs to be running to function so 2birds 1stone(/cup) and all that.

You don’t need to be on a VPS to have a twitter automater.

I know, I had a specific tool in mind, TweetAdder3.0. It only works when it is running so I need a VPS if I want it to run most of the time without needing my laptop on and connected to the internet a lot while I travel (PITA).

Other twitter tools that automate in the same way cost $20+ per month so I wouldn’t consider them at the moment. TweetAdder is a one off payment and then I just need a VPS. And it gives better search capabilities etc. Off topic!
