My Defender points to /home/……./public_html/.well-known/acme-challenge as a potentially harmful file. I think this file is related to SSL, but I don’t know if it really is infected. What should I do?

“Here’s a list of potentially harmful files Defender thinks could be suspicious. In a lot of cases the scan will pick up harmless files, but in some cases you may wish to remove files that look suspicious.”

We found this folder in your WordPress file list. Your current version of WordPress doesn’t use this folder so it might belong to another application. If you don’t recognize it, you can delete this folder (don’t forget to back up your website first!) or get in touch with the WPMU DEV support team for more information.”

    Hi @thiagorangel,

I hope you are doing well today!

The .well-known/acme-challenge directory is indeed related to SSL certificates and is used by Let’s Encrypt for domain validation when issuing SSL certificates. It’s unlikely that the directory itself is harmful.

You can safely ignore this warning after checking the directory contents if they have any files containing malware.

If you’re unsure about how to proceed or have concerns about your server security, it’s always best to consult to your hosting provider.

    Kind regards,
    Zafer
