• All the other permalinks on the site work, but the posts do not.

If you click on a blog link on the sidebar, you’ll get a 404. If you click on “Blog” in the menu, you can see the posts. The links don’t work there either. Thanks in advance.

  • Try resetting your custom permalinks back to the default setting and deleting/renaming your WordPress .htaccess file. If that works, then review Using_Permalinks before setting a custom permalink structure back up again.

Thanks a lot! That worked. I am going to read up on that.

Well, that fixed it, but how do I go about adding a custom structure? When I add a custom structure, it no longer works.

I have to admit, reading that Permalinks article made zero sense to me. I don’t get it.

First thing to know, are you on a windows, or linux server?

    is mod_rewrite enabled?

(these may be bits of info you need from your host)

are you able to switch to any of the other ‘custom’ structures on the permalinks page?

Linux…and yes, I just tried the month and name permalink provided by WP and it all seems to work great!

I do a lot of sites in WordPress, so do you think it would behoove me to learn permalink structures? I am pretty good with HTML and CSS, but server side stuff always confuses me. For example, I don’t know what “mod_rewrite” is…

    Thanks!

mod_rewrite is just an extension on your server. You probably don’t need to know much about it if you aren’t configuring your own server. You just need to know if it is on or not, it is needed for permalinks

so, if you are able to use the WP provided permalinks, then you are all set, permalinks work

I just use one of those presets myself, never needed more.

But, it may be good for you to dive into permalinks a bit more if you feel like you’d prefer different structure, for SEO, or personal taste.

I’m willing to bet google can help you find some tutorials on good WordPress permalink structure setup
