Posts there but all tags and links failing

  • I am really getting depressed about WordPress. I have spent days trying to fix it following a failed update. I THOUGHT it was ok now -after copying all fresh versions of everything bar contents folder over.

    I can see all my posts in dashboard, looking totally normal.

    If I go to my blog I can see a full page of posts – again looks normal.

    But if i click on a tag, a catagory name or ‘older posts’ I get a 404 page not found. And I have no idea at all why this is.

    In the dashboard the link to the Pixie post is https://tinteddy.com/wordpressdir/2012/friday-freebie…-musical-pixie/ ?

    But clicking on the link on the website for this post brings up a 404 – even though I can SEE the post is there as it is a recent one.

    The only difference is the dashboard one is truncated – how did that happen, is that what is causing all the issues?

    I am sorry to be such a useless pain, but I don’t understand what has now happened.

    Hey, if you click the first link I gave there, even though that is what dashboard says is the permalink, it still fails ??

    OMG, I didnt realise wordpress was so very hard to use.

    You probably already did this but… go to your settings -> permalinks and just hit save again. This fixes half the problems I have with wordpress updates/migrations.

    I agree w/ Andrew above. But if it doesn’t work, you’ll want to check your .htaccess file to make sure the changes are taking proper effect.

    No, I hadn’t done that (total newbie here) – but I have now.. and things seem to be working again.

    Thank you so very much. I was going nuts trying to work out what was different and what I had done to it.
