I have set up a static front page and a posts page using the reading settings. If there are no posts on the blog, the posts page is diverted to a 404 error page. This doesn’t seem correct to me – it should display the proper page with a “No posts yet” type of message. I have tested in both my current theme and the WordPress Default 1.6 theme.

  • This is the way that WP has always worked. Put a dummy post in “Coming soon” or something.

I’d rather not put in a dummy post.

I ended up creating a custom template for the posts page which does a query_posts call. I also removed the page from settings>reading>posts page. The page can now handle no posts more elegantly with a message rather than a 404 page.
