Posts Page Not Showing Posts

The page you are seeing is a 404 page – which means page not found.

This can happen if permalinks ( friendly urls ) are not set or broken.

first thing to do

Go to Admin > Settings > Permalinks and hit [SAVE]

then have another look

I had done some of what is described in your replies but somewhere along the way I broke things. I have gone through the steps from scratch and now everything is as I would expect.
