Posts Instead of Pages

I am using the Spacious Free Theme, and the static home page uses pages in a widgeted area at the bottom. I want to use recent posts there instead. I’m guessing I can use a text widget to do this, but what code should I try? I want to limit it to 3 or 4 most recent posts.
