• I’m working on getting my website up to speed with WordPress, but have noticed in Admin under Manage -> Categories that one category suddenly seems to have 6 posts in it, despite the fact there is none! Any ideas as to what could have caused this?

  • No posts or the categories shouldn’t exist?

If you have been moving things around, you can sometimes inadvertently assign posts to a category that it doesn’t belong. Have you looked in that category and seen no posts on your site?

Did you recently install any plugins?

We just need a little more information to help us determine what happened.

I’ve created the category in question, so there’s no problem there. I noticed it when I inserted one post. On the Manage -> Categories page, it claimed there were 7 posts in the category. Only 1 post was showing up for that category on the actual website. I deleted the post, figuring it might reset to 0. But now it reads 6 posts (in Admin) and 0 posts on the website.

The plugins I have installed are:

Get Custom Field Values at https://www.coffee2code.com/archives/2004/06/30/plugin-get-custom/

    Include Page at https://beetle.cbtlsl.com/archives/category/wordpress-plugins/

I haven’t been moving anything around, just inserting posts pretty much into one category. It’s only after I inserted a post into a second category that I noticed the problem. I also have a third currently empty category which is showing 0 posts as per normal.

If I simply deleted the category with the phantom posts in it, and then recreate it, would everything right itself? I suppose I could reinstall the database as I’ve only got about 5 posts in one category at the moment anyway. These can easily be re-added.

To reinstall the DB is it just a case of removing it via phpmyadmin and then running the install script again? Do I have to upload the whole of WordPress again to do this? Or can I just leave the files I currently have in my wordpress directory exactly where they are?
