• I’ve read through several other posts that discuss this issue. Some say this problem occurs when you enable permalinks. Others talk about the need to modify index.php to solve the problem. Others talk about creating a custom template to solve the problem.

I’ve followed the instructions on Creating a Static Front Page in the WP Codex. One thing I’m not clear on is where the instructions say “Set the “Home” template to the default template or any custom template”. What EXACTLY does this mean? I’m not using a custom template and I don’t see anywhere on “Add New Page” where this is referenced.

Also, in the instructions it states “Do not use a custom Page template for this page!”. Does this imply that if I want blog posts to appear on my Blog page I need to use a custom Page template for my Blog page?

Do I need to modify the index.php file for my theme to make my blog posts appear?

Are permalinks part of the problem?

I’m using WordPress 3.0.1, theme “Shades of Blue”, permalinks enabled, site URL https://goldtowealth.com/gold-to-wealth-blog/. The one blog post you see on the Blog page (50 Habits of Successful People) was created prior to enabling permalinks – all posts I create now do not appear on the Blog page.

Any comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

If your theme does not include any custom page templates, you will not see the Page Template dropdown.

No. Your Blog (posts) page will use the theme’s index.php template file automatically.

    Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem? If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Ten theme to rule out any theme-specific problems?

    Thanks for your reply esmi.

Great advice on trying to debug many problems by deactivating plugins and switching to the default WP theme.

After further investigation, I realized that new posts ARE in fact being posted correctly. I was reading the date wrong in my new posts, thinking WP was somehow dredging up an old deleted post (I just happened to use the same post title as the old post).

Just to clarify one thing, when you say “If your theme does not include any custom page templates, you will not see the Page Template dropdown.”, you’re talking about the dropdowns for “Front page” and “Posts page” under Settings > Reading, correct?

    Thanks again for your help!

No. I’m talking about Add New Page & Edit Page.

you’re talking about the dropdowns for “Front page” and “Posts page” under Settings > Reading, correct?

No, those refer to actual pages you have made which you could select from

@esmi was referring to a menu for selcting page templates that would exist from within your Page Edit screen….. it would be on the right….

So, if I ever use custom page templates, there would be a drop-down menu on the right sidebar on the page where I’m adding a new page or editing an existing one, correct?

    You got it!
