    Hi,

I came across Kadence Blocks a while ago while looking for a plugin that offers a sophisticated tab block and have been using it with enthusiasm ever since. That’s why I’m gradually trying to replace other plugins wherever possible if Kadence offers a comparable function.

At the moment I am trying my hand at the “Posts Block”, but I ran into the following two problems:

The excerpt is always concluded with a “read more” link. If I activate the read more function of Kadence, I have two read more links.

I tried to do a bit of research and if I understood correctly, then it is due to a change in the wordpress core, that read more is now always displayed by default at the end of an excerpt. Of course, I would much rather use the Read more link from Kadence, as it looks a lot more attractive, but then, as mentioned, I always have a double read more link. Do you therefore see the possibility of automatically hiding the standard link when the one from Kadence is used?

My second problem, which currently prevents me from replacing the previously used plugin, is the length of the excerpt. Is there a way to change this somehow?

Thanks in advance for the help!

  • Hi @hrznt. If you provide a link to the page in question I’d be happy to take a look.

    Hey @mchildress,

thanks for your offer to help.

Since the project is in a non-public development environment, I am unfortunately unable to provide a link at the moment.

But the point described should be very easy to reproduce, shouldn’t it? If not, I’ll be happy to provide a screenshot.

hi @hrznt I understand. Sure, a screenshot could be helpful. If it helps, on my test instance I’m running the following:

    • Kadence Blocks: version 2.0.1
    • Kadence Theme: Version 1.0.20
    • WordPress Core: 5.7.1

I created three sample posts and used the post block on a page. You can see by the screenshot of the result here I can’t seem to replicate the issue. Of note – this is a brand new install and I don’t have any other plugins activated.

Thanks for testing it in your environment, @mchildress

After this could not be reproduced, I went looking for causes and found that this is apparently caused by the Astra theme.

Attached is a screenshot of how it’s shown in my environment (which is identical to yours except for the theme).

As a test, I activated the standard WordPress themes “Twenty Twenty & Twenty Twenty One” and, alternatively, the “Hello Elementor” theme. This phenomenon does not occur in any of these. So it seems to be due to the Astra theme that this additional link appears.

Now what’s the best course of action here? Does something have to be adjusted with Kadence Blocks in order to filter this special case in combination with the Astra theme, or do I have to contact the guys from Brainstorm Force to have something changed on the Astra theme?

Oh and can you say something on my second question about the length of the excerpt before this is forgotten?

    Thanks again for your help!

I installed the free version of Astra theme (version 3.4.1) and can now replicate your issue as you can see here. As this issue is theme related, I would definitely encourage you to reach out to Brainstorm Force and pass along what you’ve found. They would likely appreciate it. In regards to the length of the excerpt you could (as a temporary solution), insert a custom excerpt as shown here (note red arrow). This will both shorten the excerpt and remove the second “Read More” link as you can see in the first screenshot I linked above.

For a permanent solution to excerpt length, the Kadence folks may have more info.

After doing some research on this, I found a snippet of code that can be used to hide Astra’s “read more” so that only the “read more” of Kadence Blocks remains.

And also a setting in the theme with which the length of the excerpt can be set globally. That at least helps, even if it would of course be great to have an option to set this individually in the current posts block. Maybe there will be the possibility to add the function in one of the future updates.

Thanks again for the help and the thought-provoking impulse, to look for the problem at the theme and no longer at the blocks.

Glad you were able to find a solution that will work @hrznt. I agree that it would be a great addition to have that functionality in the block and I will submit as a feature request.
