I inherited a client when my business partner moved away. She has a page (https://www.lizmurraydesign.com/portfolio) that was pulling all posts for each category into a gallery with a large image up top and thumbnails of all other posts in that category below. Each post only contained an image, so it was displayed like an image gallery.
She said she tried to see what it would look like to add content to the page, then deleted that, and although she was never using any plug-ins the entire page is now blank.
I’ve looked through the codex for a code, similar to [gallery], that she must’ve had in there, hoping that there was some built-in functionality that I wasn’t aware of. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Perhaps there was a custom template associated with the former page?

There are ways of replicating this behaviour. For example, with the AutoNav plugin you could write:

    [autonav display="posts" postid="category:portfolio" count=1 size="600x400"]
    [autonav display="posts" postid="category:portfolio" start=1 size="90x90" columns=6]

which would display the newest post in the portfolio category at 600×400, and below that the remaining posts from the portfolio category with 90×90 thumbnails, in a table with up to 6 columns on each row. This assumes that each post in that category has a Featured Image (and that featured images are enabled in your Theme).

Combined with a plugin like lightbox, you would get an effect like you mentioned.
