• My site is: https://www.owenprescott.com

Recently I tried transferring fresh WordPress files from the includes folder to my websites root. I thought everything was working however it seems the portfolio pages have now stopped working.

Whether trying to access a portfolio page from the homepage, portfolio page or dashboard the server returns a 404 error. I am using a premium theme ‘Salient’ and it was working before I tried updating the the root files. If I change the permalink structure to anything other than ” /%postname%/ ” then the page will work however it want to use postname for SEO etc and to prevent link issues.

Any ideas on how I might fix this? Thanks.

  • It looks like you seem to have altered/edited WordPress core files. For example click on this link: https://www.owenprescott.com/readme.html

If can you undo the changes that you have made and put back the WordPress core files to where they were installed?

Can you login to your dashboard?

I can login, the only problem seems to be the links to portfolio items, everything else is fine. I did copy the files before replacing them although it is possible some did not transfer fully.

Are there a set of specific files that I could revert back to rather that replacing them all? I replaced the include files to get rid of some malicious code which worked.

I recently found out that it is possible to export CSV. I will still have to associate the relevant images but at least I can preserve the written data.

My site is going to get a fresh install just in case anyone finds that my site is incomplete. This is my plan for the new install, I would appreciate any pointers. I want to make sure I am secure from the beginning.

Install content, change “wp-admin” to something else.
    Install my theme fresh
    Install BackUp Buddy > Backup
Install a select few popular security plugins > Backup
Add CSV and Media > Backup
Then hopefully I will have a good secure base with work from. I hope my SEO is not effected to badly from this. :/

I would suggest that you go for a fresh install – now that the latest version 3.6 is out, it would be ideal. Then restore your site and make other changes as desired. These changes won’t affect your SEO as long as you do NOT change your present content or change URLs other than through permalink settings or redirects (for eg. 301).
