[POST_EXCERPT] does not appear

    I have so far been unable to get the [POST_EXCERPT] to appear unless I manually write a custom excerpt and save it.

    Is that the expected behavior?

    The post excerpt shortcode uses your posts excerpt field, it doesn’t create an excerpt from your post content. The excerpt field is a built-in WordPress post field and requires manual creation. The reason we provide this shortcode is it enables you to have the post content say one thing, but if you want your social message to be completely different, you could use your post excerpt. Some people use this field also for SEO and frontend display purposes and this can make for good social media content as well.
