Post Thumbnail / Featured Image caption addition

Greetings — First of all, I really appreciate this great theme. I have my child theme close to perfect but there’s one problem which is that I need caption capability with my Featured Images.

I have figured out how to add post thumbnails with captions using a function and code added to “content-single.php” but this results in duplicate images, one with the caption and one without.

Is there a way to A) add post thumbnail captions or B) remove the default post thumbnails that are inserted with “the_content” in order to use the alternate thumbnail option mentioned previously? I’ve combed the files and can’t determine how/where the post thumbnails are currently inserted.
