Post template: Remove sidebar and realign text

Hi all,

On my website, I’m trying to modify the post template so that I can remove the sidebar, and realign the text so that is in the middle, not slightly to the left.

I presume removing the sidebar is not as simple as going into the single.php child file and removing the <?php get_sidebar(); ?> ?

I have no idea about the realign bit, so any help would be gratefully received.
