Post Tag Design in 3.0 is Unfathomable

    I upgraded my sites to 3.0 over the last couple of days. Now i find that for some inexplicable reason, it has been made far more difficult to tag a post once you’ve edited it.

    In WP 2.x, the tags panel was to the right of the tag editor. You clicked a link, got a display of tags available in tag cloud format, clicked on the ones you wanted to add, saved the post, and, voila!

    In WP 3 as far as I can tell, I have to click on “Post Tags” in the Tags panel on the left side of the editor. This brings me to a new window page where I can edit the details of existing tags and create new tags. On the right of that screen is a list of the existing tags, sub-divided into pages. If, like me, you have a few dozen tags available, adding a tag to a post is now a multi-click task. Not only that, but so far at least, I can’t get the newly assigned tag to stick to the post. There’s not an obvious “Update” button on the tags window.

    This is a HUGE step backward in usability unless, of course, I’m completely misunderstanding it or missing something obvious, which I hope I am.

  • Sounds like you’ve got the Tags box hidden.

    If you look at the top of the edit page, you should see a link labelled “Screen Options”. Click that, and a section should appear with tick boxes for various items you can have on the edit page. Tick “Post Tags”, and you should get the familiar interface back.

    You may need to click on “Choose from the most used tags” to get the cloud back.

    And you can hide the tick boxes by clicking on “Screen Options” again.

    Thanks, lesbessant! I don’t know how I managed to forget about “Screen Options”. Perhaps because until this upgrade, the options were always as I had set them way back when I started with WP.

    In any case, this fixed the problem nicely. Thanks for your patient reply.
