    Hello,

    I have received a few emails now from my sites using Post SMTP. These sites are on my web hosting re-seller account. Can you please help me make sense of the information and let me know:

    • If there is a problem?
    • And what I need to do to fix the problem.

    The last release added a feature that if an error occurred during the regular sending of an email, the plug-in attempted to use the basic method of sending the email rather than the SMTP settings to at least attempt sending a mail.
    It then sends you a transcript of the message to the admin email set for the website.

    I’ve also seen a while bunch of these and when checking the mail error logs, can’t see any failures. I’m still getting a transcript of an apparent failure. There are no errors in the php error logs either.

    It would be handy if rather than the transcript, the plugin emailed the actual error that occurred as the regular email log should have an entry of the message that we sent. The error email could give the error that occurred and include a reference by way of a link to the that’ll log entry (rather than include the whole of the email).

    HTML mails are not being rendered by this new transcript method either which confuses a lot of less experienced users.

    I’d also like the ability to switch on/off the fallback operation which could be achieved with a simple “use fallback” flag on the settings panel.

    It’s one thing for the plugin to detect an error during sending, but we can’t fix those errors if we don’t know what the actual error was.

    Whilst using the fallback means at least an mail was sent, this usually means the message may well be classed as spam at the recipient’s end due to the default method using a different sending method. (Remember, the reason we are using post SMTP is to use an email transport method we have specifically set up with SMTP, DKIM/SPF etc). The default won’t be set up in most if not all setups.

    Perhaps another option would be on detection of an error, to have a number of retries attempted. Have a ‘attempt retry on failure’ flag in combination of ‘number of retries to attempt’. Possibly a delay between retries variable too.
    This would get round transient errors due to an email server temporarily not being available rather than just acting as if a hard failure.

    Some email setups have a throttle to limit sending of emails and will reject any attempt to send an email directly after a previous email. This reduces the chance of a hacked web server from being used to send spam en masse. It might be prudent to have a setting that uses a delay between sending emails sent to the post SMTP plugin to reduce the chance of this happening. Simply adding a delay here might not work as the server could terminate the PHP call due to server limitations. One possible method would be to create a WP cron event to send an email at a set time defined by a ‘delay between sending’ delay value. Basically offload the actual sending of an email to a’thread’ that uses WP cron tasks to the email…

    Not a problem and cheers for the quick update.
    Not a small task taking on such a well loved (and used) plugin and attempting to bring it back to life. Much appreciated.
    FWIW – I didn’t mind the new menu option… don’t care where the menu is all the time it works and is making my life easier… Who spends all their time sat in the WP Admin interface anyway? (Saw that in another thread !!)
