• Up until about 2 weeks ago, WordPress automatically numbered my posts sequentially. If yesterday’s last post was https://myblog/?p=390, today’s first post would be https://myblog/?p=391.

On or about July 18, that changed. Suddenly, my posts started numbering themselves some arbitrary gap after the last sequence. Today’s posts, for example, are 637 and 642. The last post before them was 621.

    Any idea what’s happened?

  • This same thing happened to me right after I updated to the latest version of WordPress. I have about 700 posts, but now the new posts are being given numbers over 1000. How quickly will these numbers climb? The new posts seem to be given numbers that skip every 30 or 50 numbers.

I have the same issue – glad to see I’m not alone!

Sometime after the 13th July, the numbers stopped being sequential whenever I made a post.

After the 13th July I next made a post on the 6th August.

    So it went:

    168, 175, 177, 184, 187, 191, 200

I upgraded to 2.6.1 yesterday just before I made that last post.

    Very strange issue…

That’s because revisions are saved and each revision has an ID. So when WP makes an autosafe, you’re up one ID, when you edit a post, you’re up another. This goes quite rapidly as you noticed.
