Post limit removing posts from category view

Sorry if this has already been answered, but I just spent 15 minutes looking to see if it had – more than happy to stand corrected if anyone can provide me with a link ??
Because my posts are wordy and I’d rather not enable summaries, I’ve limited the front page to 3 posts, but this is limiting all categories to 3 posts – with no pagination, so any posts beyond the first three are unreachable. This makes some of my older content unreachable without delving into archives or going way back on the front page.
I’m honestly not sure whether this is a theme issue or a plugins issue – help, anyone?
