Post from category plus thumbnail

I’m looking for a hack or plugin that shows the top post from a particular category plus its thumbnail. I want to add this on top of all other posts on the index from my blog.

Or is this possible even without a plugin ? using wordpress codex ect.

Does anyone know where i can find this ? i’ve searched the plugins pages but i can’t find anything …
