    Recently, we’ve been having ridiculous problems formatting posts. I have been using WordPress for years and never had these problems in the past.

    When I go back and forth between Visual and Text, WordPress seems to develop a mind of its own. It will add/translate some crazy codes. And once that happens it seems to multiply.

    We’ve also noticed that the paragraph spacing will disappear or develop other oddities. The post we’re wrestling with today removed the list codes.

    We’ve edited and re-edited posts over and over. We’ve got to get to the bottom of this. We should be able to go back and forth. When something isn’t looking right on the screen (especially when it’s published), I go into Text mode to see what’s throwing it off.

    I used to be able to do this, fix the problem, and all was well. Now, it appears that doing this strips ALL codes and formatting. It’s a BIG MESS!

    examples?

    This may be a plugin or theme conflict. Please attempt to disable all plugins, and use one of the default (Twenty*) themes. If the problem goes away, enable them one by one to identify the source of your troubles.

    This was the response from Thrive Themes:

    The standard for sites is to use UTF-8 encoding. It looks like this wasn’t previously enforced, and the content didn’t have the proper formatting->this issue became visible now. For example ” symbol is different from the ” symbol and browsers sometimes have trouble “decoding” them. Unfortunately, the solution in cases like this is to manually clean up the content.

    +++++++++++++++++++

    We’ve accepted that we may have to clean up the formatting for these issues but it’s getting worse. The spacing is a real problem.

    a suggestion — use the plugin “better search and replace” to search for “bad characters” like those smart quotes and replace with standard quotes. It might work, but be sure to backup your database first!

    The problem has gone way beyond quotes now. WordPress removed the bulleted list codes, spacing codes, etc.

    There is something REALLY wrong.
