• If a post has multiple categories and a primary category is selected, I noticed that the breadcrumbs displayed on a post don’t take into account the primary category. Rather it looks like it uses the first category in alphabetical order.

Is there any plan on incorporating logic for the primary category to have priority in the breadcrumbs?

    Hey Suvechchha,

To explain further, as an example lets say you have a cooking blog website and you have a category of “all recipes”. Underneath “all recipes” you also have child categories for “dessert recipes” and “spicy recipes”. You write a blog for a spicy dessert recipe and you set the categories for the post to all three: all recipes, dessert recipes, and spicy recipes.

The logic for the breadcrumbs right now is that it grabs all of the posts categories in alphabetical order, then shows the first category. In the case of this example the breadcrumbs in the post would show as just “all recipes” because that’s the first category alphabetically. In reality the breadcrumbs for the post should display either “all recipes > dessert recipes” or “all recipes > spicy recipes”.

One way around this would be utilizing the posts “primary category” field but that logic isn’t considered in this theme. Hopefully that explains my issue.

    Hi Austin,

    Thank you for writing back,

The display features of the breadcrumbs don’t display in alphabetical order as we have already checked and we didn’t find any issues regarding the breadcrumbs display. Please check the screenshot for your convenience.

AS illustrated in the screenshots, the theme is a parent category that has equipment as a subcategory then the dress is the child of the equipment category. If that’s what you meant, then please make sure that you have selected the parent category of the respective post to display the subcategory in an order. If you have confusion in creating a sub-category post then do let us know or do provide us your site URL so that we could assist you in fixing your issues.

What I’m saying is that if a post has multiple categories there is no logic as to which will display in the breadcrumbs.

In my example there were 3 categories applied to the post, and the category shown in the posts breadcrumbs is “all recipes” because it comes first alphabetically. It doesn’t have to do with parent – child relationships.

Another example is this sites post. They use a modified version of AccessPress Mag but the breadcrumbs function is untouched.

    https://coverthespread365.com/mlb-picks/cincinnati-reds-vs-miami-marlins-8-28-2019-free-mlb-expert-pick/

You can see that the categories for that post are Cincinnati, Cincinnati Reds, Miami, Miami Marlins, and MLB. The primary category for the post is MLB but the breadcrumbs show Cincinnati.

    Hi there,

    Thank you for writing in,

As you have mentioned earlier that the breadcrumbs show different categories rather than the parent in the first place. But in the site, we encounter that you might not have selected parent category of some specific post like Cincinnati, Chicago. Unlike for another post as you can check in the screenshots, it works fine and doesn’t work in the alphabetical format as you have mentioned earlier.

Please make sure that you have selected the parent category for these specific posts. (Cincinnati, Chicago). Please, check the screenshot for your convenience.

I understand how parent-child categories work but that’s not the issue. The issue is when multiple categories are applied to a single post. Which category shows in the breadcrumbs?

    Hi there,

    Thank you for writing in,

When the multiple categories are applied to a single post, the breadcrumbs show the post categories in alphabetical order or either in the published date format. However, we cannot specifically identify that the particular post under a specific category will be displayed first in the breadcrumbs.

Right, so back to my original question: Is there any plan on incorporating logic for the primary category of a post to have priority in the breadcrumbs?

    Hello Austin,

    Thank you for writing back,

The logic that you are trying to incorporate in the breadcrumbs of the theme is currently not possible. As we have mentioned in the earlier section about how the parent-child category works. We keep your idea and suggestion into consideration and shall bring the updates in the future.

If you have any further queries, do not hesitate to contact us. We will assist you the best we can.
