    Hi,

I’d like to use the Twenty Thirteen WP theme for a political purpose. More precisely for a political campaign in France, for a mayor election in march 2014.

Does the WP licensing terms allow that kind of use ?

Is it possible to re-use the header’s images included with the theme on printed documents ?

Thanks for any answer or advice.

  • The Twenty Thirteen theme is licensed under the GNU General Public License version 2, which allows you a great degree of freedom in what you do with the code. Creating a political campaign website would definitely be allowed.

As for the header images, I was unable to find legal information on them, although I would assume they’re licensed under the Creative Commons. You would probably be okay to use them for printed pamphlets being given out for free, but you might get into trouble if you tried to use the images for commercial projects.

    Not true.

Ah, that’s interesting. I didn’t know the GPL could apply to images, but reading through it, I don’t see why not.

Thanks to anyone for his answers and comments.

Well, it’s a little bit hard for me to understand what is allowed and what is not allowed. According to the WordPress License page, Derivatives of WordPress code, such as plugins or themes, inherit the GPL license.

This page also refers to Drupal Licensing FAQ. Which states that GPL license covers everything on Drupal, including images.

So, for me, default images included in a WordPress theme are covered by GPL license. And thus may be re-used on printed documents, as long as those documents are not for a commercial purpose, and as they include a reference du GPLv2 for the images.

Does it seem correct for you ?

Everything in the 2013 theme is covered by the GPL license. So you can use the theme for whatever you want – no restrictions.
