Possible Defect: plugin doesn't degrade gracefully during Mailchimp outage

I had to disable several Mailchimp plugins during the current major Mailchimp outage because they appear to hang up and freeze the whole WordPress backend under these conditions. Simply logging into the WP dashboard results in it hanging up, as if there is no timeout for the Mailchimp API connection.
