Hi! I am suddenly getting spam comments on the blog post I’ve linked. It’s an old post that I updated in September. I don’t remember this post or any other post getting hit like this. Before I started getting the spam comments I had changed the article a little bit by updating affiliate links, images and republished the post. Since then I’ve noticed over the past few weeks that I’m getting several comments each day on this particular post that are from porn sites. Each comment is super long with a massive list of links to porn stuff. Luckily Akismet is catching it so I can delete them. I just want to know if there’s a reason I’m getting them and if there is anything else that I can do. I definitely don’t want my site to point to porn. Thank you for your help!

    Hi there,

Glad to hear that Akismet is at least catching all those for you.

The fact that you updated the post (not necessarily what you updated it with) might have made the latter resurface in places that might track your blog (search engines, blog aggregators, etc) as “new”, which in turn might have triggered he spam influx. Spammers thrive on new content, because they assume that it’s where engagement will happen, and they’ll get the most proverbial eyeballs if their spam makes it through.

It’s an unfortunate reality of publishing online, and in part why Akismet exists. ??

Thanks so much for the quick response! That totally makes sense and kind of what I was thinking too. It’s good to know that I didn’t do anything wrong. It is sad that spammers prey on us, but I do really appreciate Akismet. Especially after having had a severe hack a few years that I wasn’t sure my blog would recover from. Seeing the comments jolted me a little, but yes, Akismet is catching them. Thank you so much for all you do!
