I ran into a major problem and just wanted to share it here in case anywhere else comes across this.

Our site has used the UberMenu plugin forever and we have a “Mega Menu” on our first main top nav menu items – basically it’s a large rectangular submenu full of items.

Well I recently added a new item to the menu under Appearance > Menus and saved it. This killed our big submenu and it all appeared jumbled and squished overlapping into a single narrow column.

Debugging this, I noticed there was a Popup Maker option (select box) that appeared when each menu item was expanded. I hadn’t used that before. I’d only made a popup for a specific page so far. But I also remembered that there should have been an UberMenu red button there for UberMenu options. Was that due to a previous UberMenu update that changed something or was it related to Popup Maker?

After trying a few other things, I finally deactivated the Popup Maker plugin, and that did the trick. The red UberMenu button now appeared under each menu item when I expanded them. I was able to enable the UberMenu settings that were needed on that one menu item so it could have the large “Mega Menu” once again, and finally things looked like they should again.

So what had happened was that with Popup Maker plugin enabled, it put some option there, but removed the UberMenu stuff for some reason. They must have a conflict. This was the first time I had saved the menu since enabling Popup Maker and that’s what triggered the problem, basically erasing the UberMenu setting from the Services menu item.

With WordPress, particularly a somewhat complex WordPress setup with plugins, sometimes unintended consequences happen with a seemingly innocent change. And it can be really not obvious to know what’s wrong – not fun!

    Versions-
    Wordpress: WordPress 4.8.2
    Popup Maker: 1.6.6
    UberMenu 2: 2.3.2.2

  • Hello @hikingmike:

Thanks for the clear and informative explanation. The situation you encountered on your site occurs when multiple plugins are all trying to make use of something called the Walker_Nav_Menu_Edit_Custom_Fields Class (it’s a mouthful!). A MegaMenu is one such application.

We’re aware of the issue that you ran into, and have written a support article in our plugin documentation on how to respond when this situation arises. Warning! The proposed solutions are a bit technical, but they are proven to work.

Here is the link to the documentation article if you’re interested in reviewing it. https://docs.wppopupmaker.com/article/297-popup-maker-is-overwriting-my-menu-editor-functions-how-can-i-fix-this

Again, thanks for bringing this matter to the attention of the community.

Thanks. That’s great to hear you’ve known about this and looked into it, plus written a troubleshooting article about it. Good to know. I’ll read it when I get a chance.
