Polylang Custom Flags

I am trying to use my own custom flags for the menu language switcher which I have tried and following the steps on the following link https://polylang.pro/doc/can-i-use-my-own-flags-for-the-language-switcher/ but nothing appears to be working at all.
I have created polylang directory in my theme folder and for example named the flag to update the Italian flag as ‘it.png’ and then saved the URL modifications settings in the ‘Polylang’ settings.
