Help, I have been reading numerous support forums on this topic but I am still confused.

My scenario is I am redesigning an existing site. I have created a new, temporary domain name through GoDaddy, which I’ll call “newsite”. WordPress is installed in the main directory, public_html. The Home and Site URLs have been pointing to “newsite”. The hosting package is only for a single domain name. My client is happy with the new site and it is time to go live.

The existing site, which I’ll call “existsite”, is supported and hosted by a different company but I do have access to the domain name, which is registered with Network Solutions. My client wants to continue using the “existsite” domain name.

After reading the how-tos, I changed the WordPress Home and Site URLs to “existsite” and through Network Solutions I updated the DNS servers to the ones identified in GoDaddy for “newsite”. After the change propagated, all I got was ‘server not found’ messages for “existsite”. I’ve switched the servers back to the existing site until I get this figured out.

What am I missing? Also, once I get this working so that “existsite” properly points to the new site, I am hoping I can just remove the “newsite” domain as if it never existed. Will that be possible?

    Thank you!

  • If I am hearing you correctly, the only thing you missed was the part about going to Dashboard > Settings > General and changing those two boxes to either https://www.existsite.com or https://existsite.com (www or non-www) to update the database just prior to sending the domain on over.

Yes, and stop using it completely after doing the above.

    leejosepho, thanks for responding.

I did change the URLs through the dashboard settings to “existsite” :(.

This seems like it should be straightforward, so I’m missing something. Is there anything else for the DNS that needs to be changed?

Ah. What about cPanel-assigning the domain to public_html? At BlueHost, a re-pointed domain is automatically parked until that has been done.

hmm, not sure how to do that but will poke around. Thanks for the clue!

cPanel > Domains or Domain Manager or maybe something like that.

Thanks, I will look into it.

I have also read in various posts/articles that the A Name may need to be changed to point to the new IP address?

I have read some of those kinds of things, but I have never had to deal with any of that. I have domains registered at BlueHost as well as domains pointed to BlueHost, and the nameservers are all I have ever had to change.

ok, tried again today and new site is up and running!

Here is what I did differently this time:

    1. GoDaddy allows creation of an off-site DNS so that I can update the advanced fields, so I created “existsite” as an off-site DNS in GoDaddy. GoDaddy gives special nameservers in order to use this option.
    2. I exported the DNS zone info for “newsite”.
    3. From Network Solutions (the registrar for “existsite”) I pointed the nameservers to those specified by the off-site DNS in GoDaddy.
    4. I imported the DNS zone file from “newsite” into the off-site DNS on GoDaddy for “existsite”.
    5. I changed the WordPress Home and Site URLs to “existsite”.
    6. In GoDaddy, I made “existsite” the primary domain instead of “newsite”.

It took about 30 minutes or so but everything was accessible after that. One problem I didn’t think of fixing beforehand was that I had href links on some of my pages that were referencing “newsite”. I had to change those manually but luckily there weren’t very many.

Wanted to also mention that the client will now be using GoDaddy webmail as the email client, so I needed to ensure that worked smoothly as well.
