Hi Mika, I have a follow-up question to the last post if that’s ok.

I have learned this so far about the three checkbox options:

    1. “Copy files to DreamSpeed as they are uploaded to the Media Library” = upload future files to DreamObject
    2. “Point file URLs to DreamSpeed/DNS Alias for files that have been copied to S3” = change the file URLs in WordPress’ Media Library to the URLs assigned by DreamObject in DreamHost’s control panel
    3. “Serve files from dream.io” = ?????

My question, what does the third checkbox, “Serve files from dream.io”, actually do?

I am not sure because files are already uploaded (via checkbox #1), images in WordPress’ Media Library already have the new URL with “objects.dreamhost.com” paths (via checkbox #2), and files are already replicated across multiple data centres (by enabling CDN in DreamHost’s control panel – https://wiki.dreamhost.com/File:02_DreamSpeed_CDN.fw.png ).

I verified the images with “objects.dreamhost.com” URLs by entering them in a different browser on a different computer – they work and loaded properly. So, I am not sure what the 3rd checkbox, “Serve files from dream.io”, actually do.

I appreciate any information you can share.

    3. “Serve files from dream.io” = ?????

Changes the URL to dream.io ??

One of DreamObjects’ features is “Secure SSL content delivery using the objects.cdn.dream.io domain.”

    It’s explained more here – https://wiki.dreamhost.com/DreamSpeed_CDN_Overview

    Thanks.

Mmm…I am puzzled, because the examples on the wiki page shows “http” URLs.

I guess I will infer your last reply as “dream.io” also supports SSL content. Let me know if I misunderstood you.

I guess my question is still the same. How is “objects.cdn.dream.io” (with checkbox #3 ON) different from the default “objects.dreamhost.com” (with checkbox #3 OFF)?

    Thanks again.

    If I have to guess…

“objects.dreamhost.com” = just cloud storage branded as “DreamObject”

“objects.cdn.dream.io” = the actual CDN service provided by Fastly branded as “DreamSpeed CDN”

    3. “Serve files from dream.io” = instruct WordPress to get files from the CDN service provided by Fastly instead of from “DreamObject” cloud storage

Please check and let me know.

    Thanks again.

    I warn: I’m a TERRIBLE sales person.

The dream.io URL runs the image through the CDN which caches it. Direct dreamhost.com is a straight connection to our dreamobjects clusters. There are benefits to each one.

“Point file URLs to DreamSpeed/DNS Alias for files that have been copied to S3” means ‘The plugin changes the URL to whatever you tell it you want – be that objects.dreamhost.com or cdn.yourdomain.com or objects.cdn.dream.io’

Honestly, if you wanted a more in depth answer as to what, exactly, each bit does, our sales heroes can explain it better than I can. I’m the WordPress guru, and I confess to not having paid as close attention to what each thing did so much as how to make WP do it ??

    Thank you.

To sum up what I read…

“Serve files from dream.io” = serve files from DreamSpeed CDN

And if checkbox #3 is OFF, then images will be be served from dreamobjects clusters, but not dreamspeed cdn.

That is my understanding too ??
