with audio/video enclosures i’m assuming you’d like to embed them into your posts??? There are plenty of plugins availabe out there… I use vPip and theres WP ExtremeVideo for vids… i don’t enclose audio (plugins available though) but if its your own stuf upload them in the write post upload box and then include it as a link in you post .

Yes and yes.

If you link to an audio or video file in a post, and use the FULL url of the file (http and everything), then eventually that file will appear in your RSS feed as an enclosure. Few caveats to this:

1. It doesn’t happen instantly, in much the same way that the pingbacks don’t happen right after the post is made. It takes some time for the system to notice these and react properly.

2. Whatever server you have these audio or video files hosted on must be set up to return the correct MIME types for it to work automatically. In other words, if you link to an MP3 file, the webserver hosting that file must report that the MIME type of the file is audio/mp3 (or audio/whatever, really).

Failing that, you can manually include the enclosure information in a post’s custom fields, but generally it “just works” without any intervention.

Is it easy to maintain once it is setup?
Can be subjective… Most find it simple. Factors include just how many ‘services’ (bells and whistles, plugins), etc.

How difficult are upgrades?
When following instructions directly, very simple. But be careful regarding the plugins/themes you use. Don’t use something that doesn’t look supported by the author (unless you’re willing to take the onus for when it breaks).

If I am running wordpress on my hosted account, I would be hosting the files myself. However, I may need to link on files on another host at times.

I would include the full path to the audio and video files.

Pingbacks, trackbacks, and enclosures are not processed in real time. That would take too long. Instead, they get queued up. The queue runs whenever you are looking at the admin page (any admin page). There’s a hidden iframe that loads a process on the blog which performs stuff from the queue. This sometimes makes it look like your admin page takes a long time to load. Usually this is because it’s having trouble pinging another site or getting the information for your enclosures.

Patience pays off in these cases. If the site hosting the files are responsive, and you don’t have any problems with your host letting your blog get outside material from other sites, then it’s fairly quick.
