You’ll probably need to ask your webhost, they should have some sort of file manager that will let you edit the properties of the wp-content/ewww folder.

    Hello,

Thank you for your quick answer.
I think I can do it. I have access to FTP. To edit the properties, How can I do? Do I click on the right mouse click and then File Attributes? Is the numeric value that I need to change?

Ok, yep that’s what you want to modify. I recommend setting it to 755.

    (@zailana)

    There wasn’t in the folder.
I clicked on “manually” then on PNGOUT.EXE. I put it in the folder.
And now? I don’t know how do.
    Thanks in advance.

What is your server running? The path doesn’t look like Windows, it looks like linux or some other UNIX derivative. Check with your webhost to find out for sure.

    Hello,

My account is running under a Linux platform.

Can you find out what version of linux? There are about a thousand flavors and versions available.

Well, at any rate, you’ll want to click the link for the Linux & Mac builds of PNGOUT and then download the Static package for Linux from the next page. There will be a 32-bit (i686) and a 64-bit (x86_64) build in there. I would try the 64-bit one first. Just copy the pngout-static file into the ewww/ folder and make sure the permissions are 755. Also, if you are using FTP to transfer the files, make sure you find the option to transfer in BIN mode (for binary). Otherwise, FTP uses ASCII by default, which will corrupt the binary and prevent it from working.

If that still isn’t working, I need to see the full error from the automatic pngout installer. The part that says “Pngout was not installed: …”

Thanks for your answer (I didn’t get the return of my server about my version of linux).

I downloaded the file but there wasn’t two choices, only a single file to download: PNGOUT-2015319 … tar.gz.
I put in the dossier ewww (permissions 755) with the BIN mode.
I updated the backoffice, clicked on “automatically”, but nothing happens.
    Did I miss a step?

    The error message:

Pngout was not installed: extraction of files failed. Make sure this folder is writable: /homepages/0/d464806594/htdocs/isabelleharpey.com/wp-content/ewww/

    And

    Total Savings: 29.64 kB
If updated versions are available below, you may need to enable write permission on the /homepages/0/d464806594/htdocs/isabelleharpey.com/wp-content/ewww/ folder to use the automatic installs.
*Updates are optional, but may contain increased optimization or security patches

Yeah, a tar.gz file is like a zip file, just using gzip compression instead. You’ll need something like 7-zip to open it on windows and extract the contents (linux desktops have native support). The two options will be the folders that get extracted.

For that particular error message, check the plugin status to see what it says about the ‘tar’ command. If that shows as installed, then the likely problem is that your server is returning something unexpected for the ‘architecture’. At any rate, the manual instructions should get you where you need to be once you get that tar.gz file extracted.
