• Dear all bbpress / wordpress experts,

This is pertaining to the forum site

I would be greatly obliged of this forum can suggest ways and means to guide our dentist user during the registration and posting process. The intention is to make it as easy as possible for the user to post and reduce the learning curve time.

I want to make it as easy as possible for the user to post queries, upload clinical images as attachments or as inline images etc.

Therefore, I want to insert instruction text boxes whenever required. If possible the instruction text boxes should have a CLOSE button so that the boxes can be closed of the does not want to see them.

Also the instruction boxes should be mobile friendly.

    Now my queries

    1. Is there any plugin which can do this?

    2. Can we insert instruction boxes by drag and drop method?

    3. Once the boxes are inserted will my staff be able to do minor changes in the wording of the text boxes from the dashboard.

    4. If the boxes are created by manual coding than will they be disturbed of any of the plugins already installed are updated.

I also want to put instruction boxes on the registration page. The intention is to guide the new user for the registration process.

Are there any other methods for this ( chat bot, call out boxes etc.)

Hope to see a lot of responses and many thanks in advance for the same. Please open the WORD file attached to this message.

    Regards,

    Dr. Veerendra Darakh.

Since these boxes would be integrated into the forum UI, I recommend asking in the bbPress dedicated support forum: https://bbpress.org/forums/

If there are no suitable plugins or bbPress extensions, something could be custom developed. Going the custom route, you can have any feature you like, within reason. However, it seems the more slick and easy to use the UI is, the harder it is to develop. So getting everything you want will be more time consuming and expensive than getting the bare minimum to work as required. There’s likely some “just right” solution that does what you want without being crazy expensive if you’re willing to give up on or alter certain features.

For example, a drag and drop UI will be more time consuming to custom develop than a fixed, structured input form.

Many thanks for the response .

I’do not mind getting manual coding or custom coding done .

However I have one very important query.

If I get custom coding done or manual cocling done than will it get affected if any of the plugins already installed are updated or we add new plugins.

Is it possible to have a chat bot which just detects where the cursor of the user is and accordingly pops up guiding message. Is this feasible ?

Please be kind enough to response ASAP.

If properly coded, a custom plugin should not impact other plugins or hinder updates. Proper coding could require cooperation of other plugins where they provide useful action and filter hooks in their own code so the custom developer can use them to alter or extend behavior. And if in the future they alter how these hooks work, the custom code may need to be updated as well to continue working correctly.

Position sensitive help balloons are feasible, but could hinder usability on under-powered machines due to the added overhead. IMO the help balloons should only appear after a click event. This greatly reduces overhead. Typically, when mousing over an element where help is available, the cursor changes to “?”. Clicking when the “?” is active opens the help balloon for that particular element.

Obviously this will conflict if the element also needs to be clicked on to activate its function. One or the other could be activated by some other event like shift-click or right-click. But such events are less intuitive. Nearly anything is possible with the right coding, but creating a good, intuitive user interface can remain elusive.

We also should consider flexibility and maintainability on the admin side. At a minimum some user friendly way to alter the help content. Even better, the ability to add or remove help elements. An intuitive UI for selecting what elements should get new help balloons can get pretty involved.
