Plugins not updating

  • For the past few weeks, any time I go to update a plugin (doesn’t matter which) by using the Bulk Action prompt (and apply) on the Installed Plugins page or when clicking from the updates icon at the top of the dashboard, it goes to a screen showing each plugin updating (but no names), listing 1/31, 2/31, etc. They show as updated, but on leaving the screen, no updates have happened.

    If, from the Installed Plugins page, I click on the “update now” link in the yellow box in the individual plugins, it updates as normal.

    There seems to be no correlation as to the plugins that need updating, the number of plugins updating (whether it’s 1 or 5), this was happening before and after the latest WordPress update, and doesn’t seem timed with any other change, whether another plugin or theme update.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks! As I mentioned, I’m able to update the plugins successfully, but only the one way. I’m trying to figure out what’s causing the greater issue.

    It’s possible that the sheer number of plugins being updated on your install and the huge (mind-boggling huge) demand on the servers for the updates themselves might combine and reach critical mass right when you are updating.

    Auto-updating should relieve or hide a lot of that but for sites doing bulk manual updates through the updater dashboard with someone watching it might be a little alarming.

    I don’t do auto-updates myself so there’s sometimes a larger number at once… I usually get selective with the number and sometimes the specific plugins needing to be updated… single a few out, do a smaller handful at once. If the update bombs I’ll wait a bit and update again but that seldom happens here anymore.

    Sometimes it’s good to just wait a while anyway. I’m sure that you’ve seen or will see sooner or later where a plugin will update followed by a flurry of support issues and chatter and then a quick second update… sometimes a third!

    Now, if you had trouble updating or could never update… then I’d be worried.
