Plugins can only be installed under Network Admin

  • It seems I can only install plugins from the Network Admin panel, and not under any of my sites, even when I’m logged in as admin. And if I do install a plugin, the new plugin doesn’t show under any of the individual sites, even if I network activate it. I’m a bit confused, since I was just installing plugins yesterday with no problems then suddenly today it doesn’t work. I had created a new site today, but do not know if it worked before creating the site. Anyone seen this before? I have the site admin Plugin option enabled in the network settings. Thanks!

    that’s correct. Because they are installed on the *entire network*, not just one blog.

    Network activation will cause them to *not* show on the plugins list on sub sites.

    I used to be able to be in the plugin panel of any of my sites and add/remove plugins, logged in as my admin account of course. Now there’s no add/remove option except on the super admin plugin panel. Is this something new to 3.1.1?

    I have discovered that the plugin I installed that’s not showing up even when it’s not network activated seems to be an issue with that specific plugin. I installed another and it shows up fine. But I’m still baffled why suddenly I cannot add plugins from the sites plugin panels when just yesterday I could. *shrug*

    Oh, I upgraded to 3.1.1 from 3.0.4 a few days ago, but was able to add plugins no problem since then.

    Yes, this is new in 3.1. With MultiSite, installing plugins is considered a Network-wide thing. So it’s restricted to Network Admin.

    Bummer, don’t think I like that, since now it makes all my users have to contact me to install plugins. Woulda been nice of they make it a configurable option rather than mandating it, but I guess that’s a comment for another board ??

    Sorry kind of new to WP. What about the use-case where you want to configure a plugin specifically for a site, where each site may use a plugin that other sites do not or use/configure it differently than another site?

    Believe it or not… there are plugins for that.

    The installing new plugins has *always* been a Super Admin only kind of deal.

    If you had site admins installing new plugins on their own… then you had something custom.
