plugins and new layouts not showing up

    I followed the directions in attempt to to download a plug in and it did not show up. After that I attempted several other plug ins and 2 layouts. These are the steps I took.

    1. Downloaded the file
    2. Unzipped the file
    3. Copy/pasted the unzipped folder into the plugins folder. I did this through my ftp.
    4. I went into my dashboard. There were no new plugins or layouts available.

    I set up my wordpress through 1and1 hosting. I’m not sure if this effects my ability to select a new theme and plugin.

    Help?
