• Hi,

I’m using Yoast to generate my sitemaps – it makes sitemap_index.xml which indexes 6 XML sitemaps.

Google Webmaster has singled out one of these 6 sitemaps (www.time2timetravel.com/page-sitemap.xml) and reports that “Your Sitemap does not appear to be in a supported format. Please ensure it meets our Sitemap guidelines and resubmit.”

I’ve had a look at the sitemap and it doesn’t seem to be different in form to any of the others. When I click “test” in Webmaster, no errors are reported in the test result so I resubmit…except after Google has (re)processed the sitemap it reports the original error message again.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on and how it can be fixed?

  • I have the same issue. I submitted 4 sitemaps to Google and they all returned the same error:

Your Sitemap does not appear to be in a supported format. Please ensure it meets our Sitemap guidelines and resubmit.

    My sitemaps are:
    https://gurulocity.com/post-sitemap.xml
    https://gurulocity.com/page-sitemap.xml
    https://gurulocity.com/category-sitemap.xml
    https://gurulocity.com/post_tag-sitemap.xml

    i am facing same issue

    Unsupported file format

Your Sitemap does not appear to be in a supported format. Please ensure it meets our Sitemap guidelines and resubmit.

    Sitemap: xxxxx.com/page-sitemap.xml

i have no installed any cache plugins even

@tadpaul353 and @knamaky I’ve reviewed your sitemaps at https://www.time2timetravel.com/sitemap_index.xml and https://gurulocity.com/sitemap_index.xml, respectively, and they are technically correct. Is this still an issue? If it is, you may want to remove all your sitemaps from Google Search Console and then resubmit the sitemap index only.

@pagol Can you share a link to your sitemap index so that I can have a look?

@monbauza.. can i email you. don’t want post in public. or any other way. can i send via even twitter direct message ?

I’m not sure what my issue was, but I have since resolved it.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the yoast plugin, re-created the sitemaps and successfully resubmitted them to google.

    Hi monbauza,
Many thanks for taking a look. My issue has also somehow resolved itself, but not through anything I tried myself. Not understanding what caused it in the first place is a worry in case it comes back again…

@pagol Please, refer to this KB article which should help you fix the issue https://kb.yoast.com/kb/why-is-google-saying-my-xml-video-sitemap-is-an-html-file/ For private support, you may want to consider purchasing a premium license.

@tadpaul353 and @knamaky I am glad to hear the sitemap issue is resolved now.

I am having the same issue. The KB article does not help (I am not using a video sitemap or W3 Total Cache).

This is the error I receive in Google Search Console when submitting the sitemap:

    Unsupported file format
Your Sitemap does not appear to be in a supported format. Please ensure it meets our Sitemap guidelines and resubmit

I am using the Yoast SEO plugin on a site running with GoDaddy’s WordPress hosting.

Please tell me what I can do so that Google Search Console will accept the sitemap.

I have an identical situation as duvallrt…

I just installed & setup the plugin today, also on GoDaddy’s WordPress hosting, and I’m getting the same issue as @duvallrt. It’s not a video sitemap, and I’m not using any caching plugins.

I’ll see if it fixes itself, like several have stated. I’ll also try to uninstall and reinstall the plugin to see if that helps. Will update here with more info soon.

    METHODS TRIED:

    First Try…
    – Deactivated plugin
    – Re-activated plugin
    – Changed max entries from 1000 to 500; clicked SAVE
    – Resubmitted sitemap to Google; no change; did NOT work

    Then I tried…
    – Flushing GoDaddy’s cache from the WP Admin
    – Revisiting the website
    – Revisiting the sitemap_index.xml file (and refreshing the page)
    – Resubmitting sitemap to Google; no change; did NOT work

The most prominent factor causing this issue is Godaddy Managed Hosting. and mainly it’s cache.
