[Plugin: WP-SpamFree] Needs more configuration options

Btw; I’m not able to get the spamfree-contact-feature to work. I’m trying with both <–spamfree-contact–> and <!–spamfree-contact–>, but nothing appears in the page when viewing it.

@cnymike: Thanks for your feedback. Good catch. You’re right – the website field should not be required. Also, you’re right about the typo on the admin page. (It was correct in the readme.txt, and here on www.remarpro.com.) I will be releasing version 1.8 today with those elements fixed.

@kak: Try Version 1.8 that I’ll be releasing shortly, and if that doesn’t work, please submit a support request at: https://www.hybrid6.com/webgeek/plugins/wp-spamfree/support (The reason support requests need to go through that page is so I can open up a dialog with you to help troubleshoot.)

Had the same problem but solved it by inserting <!–spamfree-contact–> in the HTML panel of the editor, not the Visual.

raygene – that’s exactly true…I’ll modify the documentation to add that it needs to be inserted through HTML editor.

Okay, html editor it is. That was what I did wrong!

@cnymike, @raygene: Just added a few basic configuration options. You can choose whether or not to include Phone and Website fields and whether they should be required. You can also set the width of the Message box.

I’ve just got to hand it to WebGeek, he listens to feedback and reacts almost instantly. He has addressed the issues I noted and fixed them. Not only that, but he’s added some additional configuration options which is great! 5 stars!

My initial comments were made only 19 hours ago and WebGeek has already issued two revisions of the wp-spamfree plugin. I’m sitting here just amazed by that and just had to make this additional comment even though I just posted a minute ago.

Hey WebGeek, AWESOME plugin! Quick question… any way to configure the message that the visitor sees when/if he types in a comment that’s too short? I had a friend test a new install I just did and she said it told her to go back and type something “more meaningful” (she typed “test”). We had a good laugh and thought it kind of sounded condescending (tho quite funny!), so my question is there anywhere I can change that to say something like “Comment too short, please try again.” or something to that effect? Also, since it blocked her comment and asked her to try again, I had the admin panel indicate I had 1 blocked spam comment — would that have been hers?

What that particular message says right now is:
‘Your comment was too short. Please go back and enter a meaningful comment.’

The plugin is set to require a very minimum comment length since one-word comments are typical of spammers who just want to drop a link in there and just write a lazy ‘Thanks’ or something that doesn’t really add to the conversation.

Unfortunately as cool as that would be, it’s probably not the best idea to let users change the message, because we need the messages to be uniform for support purposes. If someone tells me they hit an error page, I can ask what message they got and help them out.

But what do you think…should we have a contest where users can submit the best ideas for spam messages? Then I could pick the best ones and use them in the plugin, for everyone. That could be fun. ??

Yes, that blocked spam count was probably hers, since technically that comment would have been spam according to the rules of the plugin. ??

I have been loving wp-spamfree for quite a while, but all of a sudden yesterday, it started not allowing legitimate comments. Yesterday afternoon it said the person’s comment was not meaningful – but it was meaningful, and it it wasn’t just a few words – it was like 30 words at least. Then last evening a long-time friend contacted me to say she had tried to comment and received a message saying her comment was spam and to “enter the conversation” – which was exactly what she was trying to do. So I went to my plugins and saw that you had an update for wp-spamfree. I did the automatic update and told me friend to try to submit the same comment. It went through just fine.

So is this the way wp-spamfree lets me know that it’s time to update? I certainly don’t want to insult commenters by having their comments degraded!

In the meantime, I’ve deactivated wp-spamfree and activated Defensio. I’ve been trying to get my readers to comment, and I certainly don’t want them rebuffed in their attempts.

@ivman: There was glitch in versions 1.9.5 and 1.9.6 that was up for less than 24 hours before I had a fix (Version 1.9.6.1). Things should be working now.
