[Plugin: WP ImageTagger] Great concept but may I suggest…

  • This is a brilliant concept for a plugin which I’m sure a lot of people will use.

    May I suggest the following:
    – Instead of a Tags page, a sidebar widget (no checkboxes necessary) akin to the Tags Cloud would be more practical (list or flat layout, Admin selected).
    – The results of the Tags search be displayed thumbnail size and in rows (the number of thumbnails per row could be selected by Admin not to break-up the theme layout). IMO, the way the results are shown at the moment, if you have a large quantity of photos for certain tags, the results will span across several pages or on one very long page.

    Thanks for your feedback. I was set on proceeding with the tag cloud implementation. Further considering this question, I just realized this would not permit multiple tags search.

    Then concerning the result page, I am totally with you and have intention to provide a more gentle output. Version 1.0 brings the root mechanism ; I worked hard on the database manipulation to secure the DB access routines as much as I can.

    Glad to see you could run it on 2.9.1.

    As far as the tags cloud go, I think it would be a good idea so maybe you should implement it, I’m sure some users will use one or the other or both.

    The tags cloud (no checkboxes) would be a quick way to get to the desired photos and I’m sure it would be sufficient for a lot of users. Those who wish a more elaborate Tags search (photo blogs, etc.) could use the photo tags page.

    I think you’re developing a great plugin and yes, a “gentler” way to output the photos would be great. I, for one, will “drop” my gallery plugin once your plugin has matured, I would rather use posts to show photos than a resource-intensive gallery module and your photo tagging system is exactly what I’m looking for to keep things organized.

    I was also thinking that having an optional photo tags cloud without the checkboxes would only send one query to the database thus less resources intensive for people on free or cheap hosts.

    You got me on the tag cloud. I put it on my todo list, I will put it as an option in the admin panel, with a new API such as wpit_tag_cloud() to have it inserted anywhere.

    Sorry for the “arm-twisting” but I’m very happy that you have the tags cloud on your todo list, I’m sure a lot of people will appreciate a simple sidebar widget.

    Will the shortcode be insertable in a text/html/php widget such as the Executable PHP widget?

    Have a look at V1.1. Although tag cloud not there yet (under good progress), you will find a bunch of new settings, with new capability to setup image list format to “gallery” style.

    Instead of running php code inside a page (inside the loop) using a plugin (security risk), wouldn’t a shortcode be the way to go?

    Hi Gene,

    Another user reported that the plugin does not load properly with WP 2.9.1. I understood it is the release you were using.

    Could you please confirm you can run ImageTagger 1.1 as well as 1.0 with WP 2.9.1 ?

    I have just installed the plugin which seems great but I can’t get it to work.
    I tagged some images and then inserted the imagetagger search form on a post but nothing happened. I would very much appreciate it if someone could please help. The post is on:

    P.S. I tried adding a plugin to run PHP in case this was the problem but it didn’t help.
    P.P.S At the bottom of my page it says “You are running WP ImageTagger 2.3.1 – Server running PHP 5.2.11” does that mean that I still need a plugin to run php?

    you need to enable your blog pages to run PHP code.

    I visited your page. Given that it displays “<?php wpit_multisort_insert(); ?>”, it means that the PHP code is not interpreted.

    Do the following:

    1 – install runPHP plugin on your blog (likely you already did that, but did not enable your page to run PHP code – see below)
    2 – allow PHP code execution when editing your page ; check at the bottom when editing your page, there is a check box “runPHP” you need to check.

    Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately it didn’t work. I followed your instructions but it still didn’t work. Does the php code go in the HTML or visual? I tried both and neither worked.
    The plugin was quite problematic since it is old and I am using WP 2.9 although I don’t think that that caused the problem as I gor teh check box “runPHP”. Although for some reason the plugin appeared twice. Could that have caused the problem?
