    A maybe simpler approach would be to leave everything within

    <code></code>

    tags intact, as that would apply to my case.

    Have you tried the compression override comment tag? If that doesn’t work for you, there is a new version coming in the near future (next few months, probably) that will allow more customization.. and an admin UI
