Brand new to WP, love this plugin and its ease of installation.

I plan on launching this forum at my company and was hoping to allow employees to first look around and, at the very least, view forum topics created by other employees (some of the younger, more tech-minded folks who would have no problem registering and setting up an account).

Is it possible to open up the forum to be publicly viewable? The WP site is hosted on our own servers, so I really have no security concerns about this. With no role defined, the forum would be read-only. If they register, their role would then allow them to post, if desired.

    Thanks for any help!

  • There is an option under Settings > WPBB Settings > “Allow Guests to View Forum”
which should be enabled by default.

Hmm, I see that setting and it is set to Yes, to allow public viewing. And when I am not logged in, I can view the forum’s “structure” such as the categories and forums. However, I receive the error “You do not have the required permissions to access this forum!” when I attempt to view the topics within a forum.

Does the “Allow Guests to View Forum” setting only allow anonymous users to view the structure of the forum, not the content, per se?

Correct – the Allow Guests to View Forum setting currently only allows guests to view the forum index and nothing else. There will be more flexibility with this in the next update (usually every 7 days which happens to be tommorow) so will mark this as resolved but feel free to post here as I recieve post notifications via email.

    Thanks.

Just to let you know that Guest Permissions are now implemented in v1.0.3. It’s still in its early days since I will probably add further settings for other roles such as “can this role edit its own topics regardless of edit permission?” in the future so it may be changed but you won’t have to ever worry about manually editing anything.

Anyway please let me know if you encounter any problems using it, suggestions, questions, etc.

    Thanks.

Thanks for the update! I just updated the plugin and I’m assuming the additional settings are under WPBB > Tools. When I navigate to this page I receive an error. Not sure the best way to share the error with you? I have a screenshot.

Sorry about that. It didn’t upload all the files correctly. Please download the plugin again.

Rock n’ roll, it’s working perfectly! Thanks for this great plugin.

I’m using ver. 1.04 and with the setting enabled for guests. However, guests can not view the content of the topics only the structure. Is there a way I can change the settings to allow guests and anonymous users to view topic discussions?

    Hey jsager,

You’re able to change guest permissions for each forum and sub forum, have you tried that? If it doesn’t save your changes make sure you refresh your roles by going to WPBB -> Tools -> Refresh Roles (this basically updates your database with your current roles so any time you make changes to your roles: renames, new ones, removed ones just refresh them).

    Thanks!
