[Plugin: WordPress.com Stats] WP Stats won't allow to change my API key

  • Hey all,

    Long story short.

    I had to disable all my plugins for an unrelated tech issue.

    When I re-abled my WP Stats plugin I copied the number in the Askimet and plugged it into WP Stats. I had forgotten that the number was initially added by my former designer about six years ago (since then I have been using my own API).

    So, I get this error message: “The API key “af57REMOVED6” belongs to the WordPress.com account “renderpro”. If you want to use a different account, please enter the correct API key.

    Note: the API key you use determines who will be registered as the “owner” of this blog in the WordPress.com database. Please choose your key accordingly. Do not use a temporary key.
    Add blog to WordPress.com account

    This blog will be added to your WordPress.com account. You will be able to allow other WordPress.com users to see your stats if you like. button to Add blog to Account”

    I then tried “If you want to use a different account, please enter the correct” to click the link. The page refreshes but does not offer a a space to add my API key.

    I then tried to a click the “Add blog to WordPress.com” button.

    And I get this error message.

    The owner of that API Key (renderpro) is not on the access list for this blog (10REMOVED0). To be added to the access list, you must contact support.
    Error from last API Key attempt:

    I have contacted support and have exchanged a dozen emails. Mostly they just keep telling me to do the same things I described above.

    I have also tried reinstalling the plugin, logged in using different browsers, changed the Askimet API to my number. Nothing works. Any help at all is appreciated.

    I took the API key of another blog of mine and it works.
    But after i thought i want to use a different one.

    But i can not change it.
    I tried all the things Dev93 already tried. But nothing helps!

    Please help!

    I also could use some help with this, and switching the API for the plugin to a new account. Thanks in advance anyone…

    I have just experienced the exact same problem with my own blog.

    The stats had been working fine for a good few months and then a couple of days ago I log in to be met with the same issues as described above.

    There doesn’t seem to be anyway for me to change the API key value to something else which is really annoying and I really don’t want to start debugging some ones else’s code to find out why.

    If you’re having the exact same issue, try these steps on PHPMyAdmin:

    1. Select your WordPress DB name from the left sidebar dropdown
    2. Click “wp_options” in the sidebar (assuming your DB table prefix is “wp_”)
    3. Click “Search” tab at the top
    4. Enter “stats_options” for option_name search
    5. Hit “Go”
    6. On the next page, delete the found data

    This will clear the API key previously entered.

    (Note that this doesn’t work if the API key you’re trying to use is not for the WordPress.com username associated with your blog. You may need to add or switch users first)

    I actually did try what you suggested the other day but there must be an issue elsewhere because once I have deleted the option and added in a new key I get this message:

    Error from last API Key attempt:

    The owner of that API Key (XXX) is not on the access list for this blog (1063…). To be added to the access list, you must contact support.

    However when I try to contact support I get a message saying to use the forums as they have gone away for a while.

    So just to clarify the situation

    I have a blog hosted on WordPress e.g myblog.wordpress.com (X)

    I also have 2 self hosted wordpress blogs (Y and Z) which I want to use wp_stats for.

    Up until a few days ago they were all working fine and both of my self hosted blogs were using the API key from the wordpress account linked to my wordpress hosted blog

    One of my self hosted blogs is still working with the API key the other one isn’t.

    When I log in to my wordpress account (X) I can see under the “My Blogs” option the wordpress blog and then in the “Linked Blogs” section
    the self hosted blog (Y) I do have wp_stats for but not the blog (Z) I am having problems with.

    What I cannot find is a way to relink the problematic self hosted blog with my account as I am assuming that this is what I need to do.

    If I click on the “Register another blog” option it takes me to this page https://en.wordpress.com/signup/

    Obviously I don’t want another wordpress.com blog I just want to relink my self hosted blog with my account to get round this problem.

    Maybe I am missing something or being a complete numpty because I cannot see a way to achieve this and resolve this problem.

    Do you have any ideas?

    What happens when you follow the steps for changing the usernames?
    Please describe how you are getting stuck at the step #3, with error messages and what you’re seeing on screen that is different from the instruction.
