    Same for me!

I fixed this by editing each category via /wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=category

At the very bottom of the editing page for a category there is a line: Include in sitemap?:

By default it is set to “Automatic”
When I changed that to “Always” the category-sitemap.xml was generated and no more 404 error.

i was also having the same problem with category sitemap for my blog

    thanks, arnoud’s solution worked.

    Hi Arnoud

Yes, this work-around fixed my problem (reported by Google Webmaster Tools as “sitemap seems to contain html code” – it was pointing to a post!

This doesn’t seem to have been fixed in the latest update – I’ve installed 1.2.8.7 this morning (prompted by the Plugins update indicator)

    Thanks Arnoud.

I just started working with WordPress 2 weeks ago. This morning I installed the WordPress SEO plugin for the first time and I get the 404-problem.

    Your solution worked for me.
