Sitesmaps are working just fine. You should check FAQ at Yoast site https://yoast.com/xml-sitemap-in-the-wordpress-seo-plugin/
Why do I get a 404 when opening the sitemap_index.xml file? You probably have W3 Total Cache active, that is preventing 404 errors for static files to go through to WordPress. Update to the latest version of W3 Total Cache or add, under the browser cache page, this exemption:

    sitemap(_index|[0-9]+)?\.xml

    Hi ssiddiqi1:

Thank you for the follow up.

Yes I am using W3TC and the following exceptions were added to my Browser Cache Exceptions many months ago:

    robots\.txt
    sitemap(_index)?\.xml(\.gz)?
    [a-z0-9_\-]+-sitemap([0-9]+)?\.xml(\.gz)?
    sitemap(_index|[0-9]+)?\.xml

Right now my sitemap_index.xml, posts and tags are working, but my category-sitemap.xml comes up 404.

I will say that I recently made some changes to my taxonomies using the new Term Optimizer (Yoast) and I upgraded another plugin, SEO Images (Prelovac) to a pro version that generates an image sitemap, but I noticed problems since I upgraded WP SEO from 1.28

I can’t even get into my dashboard – does anyone have any suggestions? I just that the fatal error message when I click on anything.
