I upgraded a couple sites to 3.4.1 and my category pages started to give 404 Not Found errors. After some digging, turning off plugins and switching themes, I found that the WordPress SEO plugin option to “Strip the category base (usually /category/) from the category URL” was causing the problem.

When that is checked, I get the 404 errors on the category page. When it is not checked, it works properly.

So, while domain.com/category-slug used to work prior to 3.4.1, that results in a 404 error now. Turning off the option means the URL is domain.com/category/category-slug now, but at least a page comes up.

  • I had the same problem. I fixed it by going into SEO-settings and click Save.

Wow, that’s awesome! I put the check back on the option, clicked Save, and all is well. Thanks for pointing this out.

I discovered this solution by myself but it turned out that it comes back and I have to check my cat links in the menue constantly to re-save the settings in order to fix the problem ??

I hope Yoast figure out what is the problem in the next update, my website is new and that makes the impact very low, but if I get this kind of error in my other website it would be disaster as all my menus would have 404 without me knowing to fix it as this error comes and goes without consistent pattern.

    Please help

Many sites are affected, meanwhile I advise you to disable that stripping category option and just use different plugin for it.

WP No Category Base – WPML compatible

you just install it and activate. there is no settings. it does only one thing – strippin /category/ from urls.

it is compatible with wordpress seo.

    I have the same problem.

Every so often my category pages 404 and I need to go and turn the Strip category base option off (and save), then on again (and save) to fix it.

I used to use WP No Category Base – WPML compatible with no problem, so I have returned to using that until this is fixed.

    Thanks qqqq9999 ??

WordPress SEO plugin option to “Strip the category base (usually /category/) from the category URL” is also no compatible with wpml.

We hope that Yoast read it and with the next realease fix it.

I have same issue on https://www.humordestination.com but on https://www.thebeststatusmessages.com its working fine :/ don’t know how to resolve it. If any of friend can help here…

This problem still exists. I had to resave settings.

    Any solution from Yoast?

Thanks so much, qqqq9999. That totally fixed my issue. Darn that Yoast. I haven’t seen a fix, but I have seen a lot of questions/issues on the various boards about this issue.
