[Plugin: WordPress SEO by Yoast] Custom Taxonomies, Indexation, and XML Sitemaps
-
WordPress community,
I am using the WordPress SEO plugin by Yoast with some custom taxonomies, and I’m having a few problems. To best illustrate those problems, I’m going to compare what the plugin does for generic ‘Categories’ and ‘Tags’ versus what it does for my custom taxonomies:
1. Regular-old Categories and Tags
If I go to the ‘Indexation’ link in the plugin’s main navigation menu, I can choose to not index my ‘Category Archives’ and/or ‘Tag Archives’ by selecting each option’s respective checkbox. HOWEVER, I can still have the category and tag URLs show up in my XML Sitemap (I assume so robots can follow the links, but not index them).
2. My custom taxonomies
My custom taxonomies don’t show up under the ‘Indexation’ link, so I have to go to each option of each custom taxonomy and configure the WordPress SEO options for the respective option (wow…that was a mouthful!). I can select to not index each option, in theory doing the same work as if my custom taxonomies were listed on the ‘Indexation’ page of the plugin. HOWEVER, when I go to the XML Sitemap option in the plugin, the URLs for my custom taxonomies don’t show up. I’m assuming this will somewhat hinder robots’ traversal of my site.
So my question is: Why do category and tag URLs show up in the XML sitemap when they are chosen not to be indexed on the ‘Indexation’ page, but custom taxonomies do not show up in the XML sitemap when they are individually configured to not be indexed (I still made sure they should be followed–I only checked the no index option)?
Thanks for your help!
Mike
