[Plugin: WordPress Importer] Import results in 25 different resolutions of same image-file

  • When I changed host last weekend I imported my blog and used the WordPress import plugin. I was very amazed that this resulted in a disk space used of over 300 MB (previously only 12 MB and the xml-file that I imported has a size 1.11 MB). When I checked where this disk space use comes from I found that this was caused by the number of images in the wp-content\upload folder. Most of my images now exist on the server in 25 different resolutions. All of these images were created in the few minutes during the import.

    I asked this in the other thread – Can you please double check that these are all the exact same image? I agree, this is hinky beyond compare. I’ve used the importer many times and never had it make more than 7 images.

    Also are you running any plugins BEFORE the import? What theme are you using? A theme can generate multiple image sizes, as can plugins, so lets try to rule out as many as possible.

    I double checked and I am certain it’s the same image. The only variation is that some images have “only” 10 other copies (different resolutions) and some have up to 25 copies. If my blog only needs 1 resolution there are 10 copies. So the number of copies is partly explained by the fact that the theme generates several image sizes. But most of the copies were created during the import. I was not running other plugins. So I still think it’s the Importer plugin.
