[Plugin: W3 Total Cache] Continuously Updated Post Question

    I have just installed W3 total cache onto a website, not just for speed, but also to cope with large spikes of traffic that I get a few times per year based around certain events.

    When this happens, I’ll get 10-20k visitors, almost entirely on just a single post or two of the site. These posts are constantly updated, making a live blog of event coverage, and people are reloading that all throughout the time. Therefore, simply caching the page wouldn’t work, since the folks wouldn’t see the updates. What’s the best way to improve performance for a site considering this?

    If you have to generate lots of pages quickly you should use an opcode cache and database and object caching via the opcode cache.

    I’m sorry but I’m pretty much a novice on the technical side of things. Could you explain the setup I would use for that?

    You need to have a virtual private or dedicated server to use those optimizations. If you do, there are instructions that you can follow on the install tab of the plugin. Many hosts install lots of software for you if you ask.
